Our journey continues
August 2008

We're on the road!

Climbing up hills, cruising on the flats, crossing the great land to set the farm table from coast to coast... Today we are in Boulder, Colorado after two events this past weekend in Colorado (read about them on our blog). We're gearing up for a farm dinner marathon this weekend: Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. Four dinners in five days - we'll see you there!

Leaders of a Future Slow Food Nation Gather for an Eat-In in San Francisco

Monday, September 1, 2008 ~ 11am to 3pm ~ Dolores Park, San Francisco

Slow Food Nation 2008 is happening in San Francisco, August 27th to September 1st, and we're going! The OITF team, Jim, and Katy are setting the signature Outstanding table at Slow Food Nation.

On Monday, September 1, 250 students and young farmers, cooks, food artisans, activists and eaters will gather for an Eat-In in San Francisco's Dolores Park to demonstrate that changing the way we eat can be simple, joyous and accessible to everyone. Outstanding in the Field is proud to partner with Slow Food for an extraordinary event that closes six days of events for Youth Food Movement participants at the largest celebration of food in America.

The Eat-In is an opportunity for the inheritors of our food system to share stories, break bread and discuss the next steps in building a global movement of young people committed to bringing good, clean, fair food to everyone. Participants will form teams to pick up produce from local markets on Saturday and Sunday, then take the farm-fresh ingredients back to private and professional kitchens across the city, where up-and-coming chefs will lead the groups in preparing food for the communal table.

Organizers expect a strong turnout on Labor Day. The meal is free, but all participants must register for the Eat-In on Slow Food Nation's website.

Jim Denevan will be at the Eat-In with his 16 year-old son Brighton, who will bring vegetables from the Food What! community garden in Santa Cruz.

Join us as we gather to honor the young farmers and food activists who are planting the seeds of a future food system that will produce healthy, delicious, just and sustainable food for all.

This is an exciting, unique Outstanding special celebration for young food activists. For more information or to register, visit the Slow Food Nation website.

New Bay Area Farm dinner event this Sunday

No, it's not ours, but we are excited to let you know about it! Farmer friend Jerry Thomas of Thomas Farm (site of our fourth OITF farm dinner back in 2000) let us know about this event. A benefit for the Santa Cruz Open Space Alliance's Sustainable Small Farm Protection Program and Slow Food Monterey. See a tentative menu here. The dinner will take place at the beautiful High Ground Organics farm (site of our seventh OITF dinner in 2002) on Sunday, August 17th at 4 pm. This is an amazing site for a dinner and we hope some of our outstanding friends can attend and help a worthy cause. For reservations please contact OSA: 831.423.0700 or osa@santacruzosa.org

There are still tickets available, although they won't last long with substantial European press coming up. We're looking forward to seeing you there. Buon Appetito!

International relations

This farm dinner season we have two charming, hard working and knowledgeable European interns. Both are students of gastronomy exploring American food culture by Outstanding bus. Anna Lena Banzhaf and Annette Weber are from Germany and Switzerland, respectively and are a very valuable addition to our crew! Thank you both for all of your hard work!
