When we met Sarah Welch in 2017, she insisted that we come to Food Field. Sarah is deeply integrated into the Detroit food community. In 2011, founders Alex Bryan and Noah Link converted an abandoned elementary school into this bountiful four-acre farm and have been a driving force in the revitalization of the Boston-Edison neighborhood of Detroit. Now the farm is managed by host farmer Leandra King, who tends to a variety of vegetables and herbs, a young fruit tree orchard, laying hens and ducks, honey bees, and catfish and bluegill ponds. Chef Sarah is a master of whole-animal butchery and root-to-leaf vegetable cooking, sourcing nearly every ingredient from within five miles of the restaurant. Marrow was a 2019 James Beard semi-finalist for Best New Restaurant, and this year, Sarah is a JBA semi-finalist for Best Chef: Great Lakes.
