This will be our very first table in Africa. Kleinood is a small farm comprised of ten hectares of Syrah, Mourvedre, Roussanne and Viogner vines and two hectares of Tuscan olive trees – all along the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, a premier red wine growing area in the Western Cape about 30 miles outside Cape Town. Kleinood is an Afrikaans word that means “small and precious,” which is just what this place is. The vineyard and olive grove are surrounded by abundant wilderness, native fynbos and roses. In addition to wine, Kleinood produces olive oil, wild honey and perfume – all of which capture its unique terroir. In the field kitchen we have a team of Cape Town chefs: Jenny Ward is the talent behind Chefs, a “fast fine dining” concept with a commitment to carefully sourced ingredients and a passion for the woodfired oven. Jess Shepherd and husband Luke owned and operated the wildly popular The Table at De Meye Wine Farm for the last six years. Good to Gather is their new venture, a curated pop-up event series highlighting the ingredients of their own garden.
