We love the Markegards’ curly-haired belted Galloway cattle! The Markegard family raise grass-fed beef in their rolling pastures here in the coastal hills near Half Moon Bay. Their approach to managing their herd simulates the grazing patterns of native elk and antelope that once roamed California’s grasslands. The Markegards’ fields supply quality grass-fed beef to South Bay farmers markets in San Mateo and Palo Alto, along with pastured lamb, pork and chicken. Guest chef Jeffrey Wall cooked for us in 2016 when he was at Kimball House in Decatur, Georgia. Now he runs Alderwood in Santa Cruz, a new restaurant with an affection for French flavors, wood-fired cookery and the farms along the central coast. It’s great to have Jeff here in our hometown!
